Overview
Malaria is a serious tropical disease spread by mosquitoes. It can be fatal if not treated promptly. Antimalarial tablets are essential for travellers visiting affected areas.
Understanding Malaria
Once inside the bloodstream, the parasites travel to the liver, multiply, and attack red blood cells, causing fever, fatigue, and flu-like symptoms. Plasmodium falciparum is the most dangerous form.
Treatment & Prevention
Antimalarial medications: Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil): popular for short trips. Doxycycline: taken daily, starting 2 days before travel. Prevention also includes insect repellent, protective clothing, and mosquito nets.
