Overview
Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus, causing heartburn, regurgitation, and discomfort. Chronic acid reflux is known as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD).
Understanding Acid Reflux and Heartburn
Heartburn is the most common symptom, often felt after meals, when lying down, or during the night. Symptoms include: burning pain in the chest or throat, sour taste, bloating, nausea, persistent cough, and hoarseness. Frequent episodes may indicate gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD).
Treatment & Prevention
Our experts may recommend: Antacids for quick relief. H2 blockers or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for longer-lasting control. Prevention: eat smaller meals, avoid spicy/fatty foods, stay upright after eating, maintain healthy weight, avoid smoking and alcohol.
