Optilast Eye Drops: Effective Relief for Hay Fever Symptoms

What is Optilast?

Optilast is an effective antihistamine eye drop designed to relieve itchy, watery eyes caused by seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (hay fever) and perennial allergic conjunctivitis. It contains the active ingredient azelastine hydrochloride, which reduces eye irritation by blocking the effects of histamine released in response to allergens like pollen, pet dander, dust, or mould.

What is Optilast Used For?

Optilast is primarily used for treating:

  • Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis: Caused by outdoor allergens like pollen, with symptoms during high-pollen seasons.
  • Perennial allergic conjunctivitis: Caused by year-round allergens such as dust or pet dander.

How Does Optilast Work?

Optilast’s active ingredient, azelastine hydrochloride, is a type of antihistamine that:

  • Blocks histamine, the chemical released by the immune system during an allergic reaction.
  • Prevents irritation, reducing symptoms such as itchiness, redness, and excessive tearing.

You can expect noticeable symptom relief within 15-30 minutes of applying the drops.

How to Use Optilast

Instructions for Application

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly.
  2. Gently wipe away any moisture around your eyes with a clean tissue.
  3. Unscrew the bottle cap and check the dropper is clean.
  4. Gently pull down your lower eyelid.
  5. Place one drop in the middle of the lower eyelid without touching your eye.
  6. Release the eyelid and press the inner corner of your eye near the bridge of your nose for a few seconds.
  7. Blink a few times to spread the drop evenly.
  8. Wipe away any excess liquid with a tissue.
  9. Repeat the process for the other eye.

Important Usage Notes

  • Apply Optilast twice daily or up to 4 times a day if needed.
  • For prevention, use 30 minutes before exposure to allergens.
  • Avoid wearing contact lenses while applying the drops. Wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
  • Do not use Optilast if the bottle has been open for more than 4 weeks or longer than 6 weeks of continuous use.

Benefits of Optilast

  • Quick relief: Symptom improvement in as little as 15-30 minutes.
  • Direct application: Targets the affected area for faster action.
  • Can be used preventatively by timing doses before allergen exposure.
  • Safe for year-round use for perennial conjunctivitis.

Potential Side Effects of Optilast

Optilast is generally well tolerated. Common side effects include:

  • Temporary blurred vision.
  • Mild eye irritation (e.g., stinging or burning sensation).

Rarely, users may experience a bitter taste in their mouth if applied incorrectly. If side effects persist or worsen, consult your healthcare professional immediately.

Who Can Use Optilast?

Optilast is suitable for most people; however, consult your healthcare professional if you:

  • Have eye conditions or sensitivities.
  • Take monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MOAs) or medications for Ménière’s disease (e.g., betahistine).

Optilast should not be used without medical advice if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to conceive.
