Mycoplasma genitalium is a sexually transmitted bacterium that can cause urethritis, cervicitis, and pelvic inflammatory disease. It is becoming increasingly recognised as a significant STI.
Understanding Mycoplasma Genitalium
It attaches to cells lining the urethra, cervix, or reproductive tract, triggering inflammation. Spread through vaginal or anal intercourse without a condom.
Treatment & Prevention
Doxycycline (100mg) taken twice daily for 7 days is the recommended first-line treatment. Resistance to certain antibiotics is increasing.
