Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). It causes painful blisters and sores in the genital area. While there is no cure, antiviral medication can manage outbreaks and reduce transmission.

Once infected, the virus remains dormant and may reactivate periodically. How it spreads: direct skin-to-skin contact during vaginal, anal, or oral sex.

Treatment options include: Aciclovir: commonly prescribed to shorten outbreak duration. Valaciclovir (Valtrex): helps manage frequent recurrences.
