Scabies
Scabies is an intensely itchy rash caused by tiny mites burrowing into the skin. It spreads through close skin contact and does not clear on its own, but a whole-body permethrin treatment, repeated a week later, kills the mites.

Overview
Scabies is caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. The itch, which is usually worse at night, and the fine raised burrows between the fingers and around the wrists, waist, buttocks and genitals come from an allergic reaction to the mites and their eggs. Symptoms can take up to eight weeks to appear after you catch it.
Understanding Scabies
Mites pass between people through prolonged skin-to-skin contact, so partners and household members are often affected at the same time, even without symptoms. Everyone in the household should be treated on the same day, and clothing, towels and bedding washed at 60°C or sealed in a bag for 72 hours. Itching can continue for two to four weeks after successful treatment while the skin settles.
Treatment & Prevention
Treatment options include: Permethrin 5% cream: applied over the whole body from the neck down (including the scalp in older adults and young children), left on for 8 to 12 hours and repeated after seven days. Treat all close contacts at the same time and avoid skin contact until both applications are complete.
