Psoriasis
Psoriasis causes patches of thickened, scaly skin that can be itchy, sore and hard to hide. It is a long-term condition, but the right topical treatment can clear plaques and keep flare-ups under control.

Overview
Psoriasis is an immune-driven skin condition in which skin cells are replaced far faster than normal, building up into raised, well-defined plaques with silvery scale. Plaque psoriasis most often affects the elbows, knees, lower back and scalp, and it tends to come and go in flares.
Understanding Psoriasis
The overactive immune response runs in families and can be triggered by stress, skin injury, infections such as a sore throat, alcohol, smoking and some medicines. Psoriasis is not contagious. Some people also develop joint pain or stiffness (psoriatic arthritis), which needs a review with your GP.
Treatment & Prevention
Treatment options include: Silkis (calcitriol): a steroid-free vitamin D ointment applied twice daily to plaques on the body. Topical steroids (Eumovate, Betnovate, Elocon, Dermovate): used in short courses to settle inflamed plaques, with potency matched to the site. Scalp treatments (Diprosalic Scalp Application, Betacap Scalp Solution): loosen scale and calm itching on the scalp. Moisturise daily, avoid picking at plaques and keep known triggers in check between flares.
