About loperamide
Loperamide slows bowel movement and can reduce the frequency of loose stools. It does not treat every cause of diarrhoea or replace lost fluid and salts. This entry is for six capsules containing 2mg each, separate from the existing larger pack.
Before using it
Check suitability with a pharmacist. Do not self-treat blood in stools with fever, severe diarrhoea after antibiotics, a flare of inflammatory bowel disease, constipation or a swollen abdomen. Severe or persistent abdominal pain and signs of dehydration need assessment. Tell the pharmacist about liver problems, pregnancy, breastfeeding and all other medicines.
How to take it
Follow the leaflet supplied with the exact product. Do not exceed its maximum dose or combine it with Imodium or another product containing loperamide. Excessive doses can cause serious heart rhythm problems. Stop and obtain medical advice if symptoms do not improve within 48 hours. Long-term or recurrent diarrhoea requires a diagnosis rather than repeated self-treatment.
Side effects and support
Constipation, wind, headache, nausea or dizziness can occur. Stop if constipation or abdominal swelling develops. A severe allergic reaction, fainting or a fast or irregular heartbeat needs urgent medical help. Continue appropriate fluids and ask whether oral rehydration salts would be suitable.
Further information
Generic manufacturers may differ. Read the supplied leaflet, keep the pack away from children and check its expiry date. The six-pack price is factual and does not imply that this medicine is required with a weight-loss prescription.
