Zelleta: Reliable Progesterone-Only Mini Pill

What is Zelleta?

Zelleta is a progesterone-only mini pill (POP) that provides effective contraception by using the synthetic hormone desogestrel. With over 99% effectiveness when taken correctly, Zelleta offers a reliable and reversible method of preventing pregnancy.

Unlike combined contraceptives, Zelleta does not contain oestrogen, making it suitable for women who are sensitive to oestrogen or have specific health concerns. Additionally, Zelleta can regulate periods, minimise menstrual symptoms, and help manage conditions like endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Benefits of Zelleta

  • Highly Effective: Offers over 99% protection against pregnancy when taken as directed.
  • No Oestrogen: Safe for women who cannot use oestrogen-based contraceptives.
  • Suitable for Special Conditions: Can help reduce symptoms of PCOS, endometriosis, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
  • Lighter or Absent Periods: Many women experience reduced menstrual bleeding or no periods at all.
  • Breastfeeding-Friendly: Does not affect breast milk production, making it suitable for nursing mothers.
  • Flexible Usage: A 12-hour window to take the pill offers greater flexibility compared to other mini pills.

How Does Zelleta Work?

Zelleta primarily works by:

  1. Thickening Cervical Mucus: Prevents sperm from entering the womb.
  2. Thinning the Uterine Lining: Reduces the likelihood of a fertilised egg implanting.
  3. Inhibiting Ovulation: In some women, it prevents the ovaries from releasing eggs.

This process ensures effective contraception and helps regulate menstrual cycles.

How to Take Zelleta

  1. Dosage: Take one pill daily at the same time each day.
  2. No Breaks: Unlike combined pills, Zelleta is taken continuously without a break between packs.
  3. Easy to Swallow: Pills can be taken with or without food and water.

Starting Zelleta

  • First Day of Period: Provides immediate protection.
  • Any Other Time: Use additional contraception (e.g., condoms) for the first 7 days.
  • Switching from Another Contraceptive: Start immediately after finishing your previous method without a gap.

What to Do If You Miss a Dose

  • Less than 12 Hours Late: Take the pill as soon as you remember and continue as normal.
  • More than 12 Hours Late: Take the missed pill immediately, use barrier contraception for the next 7 days, and continue your pills as usual.

Vomiting or Diarrhoea

  • Within 3–4 Hours of Taking Zelleta: Take another pill immediately.
  • Prolonged Sickness: Use barrier contraception during the illness and for 7 days after recovery.

Side Effects of Zelleta

While most women tolerate Zelleta well, some may experience mild side effects such as:

  • Changes in mood
