NuvaRing: A Flexible, Effective Contraceptive Solution

What is NuvaRing?

NuvaRing is a vaginal contraceptive ring offering a reliable and convenient method to prevent pregnancy. With a 2-inch diameter, this small, flexible ring releases hormones steadily over 3 weeks, providing over 98% effectiveness when used correctly. Inserted for three weeks and followed by a one-week break, it is a discreet and easy-to-use option for women.

How Does NuvaRing Work?

NuvaRing works by releasing two synthetic hormones, ethinylestradiol (oestrogen) and etonogestrel (progestogen), which prevent pregnancy through three mechanisms:

  1. Inhibiting ovulation: Prevents the ovaries from releasing eggs.
  2. Thickening cervical mucus: Blocks sperm from entering the womb.
  3. Thinning the uterine lining: Prevents a fertilised egg from implanting.

Benefits of NuvaRing

  • High effectiveness: Over 98% protection against pregnancy.
  • Low maintenance: Insert once every 3 weeks, with no daily pills to remember.
  • Uninterrupted protection: Not affected by vomiting or diarrhoea.
  • Convenience: Flexible, easy to insert, and no special positioning required.
  • Improves periods: Regulates cycles and may reduce cramps and PMS symptoms.
  • Skin benefits: Can help reduce acne and improve overall skin condition.
  • Cancer risk reduction: May lower risks of endometrial and ovarian cancers.

How to Use NuvaRing

NuvaRing is easy to use with minimal interference in daily life.

Insertion

  1. Remove the NuvaRing from its packaging.
  2. Squeeze it between your thumb and index finger.
  3. Insert into your vagina until comfortable.

You can start NuvaRing:

  • Day 1 of your period: Offers immediate protection.
  • Days 2-5: Use additional contraception for the first 7 days.

Removal

  1. Hook your index finger around the ring and gently pull it out.
  2. Dispose of it in the foil wrapper, not in the toilet.

After the 3-week insertion, remove the ring for a 7-day break. Insert a new ring after the break, even if you are still bleeding.

What If You Forget to Remove or Insert NuvaRing?

Forgot to Remove (Beyond 3 Weeks):

  • Less than 7 days late (up to 28 days total): Remove the ring and take the usual 7-day break.
  • More than 7 days late: Remove the ring, insert a new one immediately, and use barrier contraception for 7 days. Consider emergency contraception if you’ve had unprotected sex.

Forgot to Insert:

  • Use additional contraception for the first 7 days.
  • If unprotected sex occurs, seek emergency contraception.

What If It Falls Out?

  • Within 48 hours: Wash with cool water and reinsert.
  • More than 48 hours: Use additional contraception for 7 days.
