Reliable Contraceptive for Women

What is Microgynon?

Microgynon, also sold as Microgynon 30, is a combined oral contraceptive pill that effectively prevents pregnancy. Taken daily, it contains two active ingredients, ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel, which work together to provide highly reliable contraception. Additionally, it can help manage other conditions such as endometriosis, premenstrual tension, and heavy or painful periods.

When taken correctly, Microgynon is up to 99% effective in preventing pregnancy.

What Are the Benefits of Microgynon?

Microgynon offers numerous benefits beyond contraception, including:

  • Immediate Protection: Provides instant contraceptive coverage if taken on the first day of your menstrual cycle.
  • Lightened Periods: Helps make periods lighter, shorter, and more manageable.
  • Reduced Menstrual Pain: Minimises pain experienced during periods.
  • Regulated Menstrual Cycles: Keeps your periods regular and predictable.
  • Reduced Premenstrual Symptoms: Can alleviate mood swings and bloating associated with premenstrual tension.

How Does Microgynon Work?

Microgynon protects against pregnancy in three ways:

  1. Prevents Ovulation: Stops eggs from being released from the ovaries.
  2. Thickens Cervical Mucus: Makes it harder for sperm to enter the womb.
  3. Thins the Uterine Lining: Prevents the implantation of a fertilised egg.

These mechanisms work together to provide reliable contraception while supporting menstrual health.

How Do I Take Microgynon?

Microgynon pills are taken daily for 21 days, followed by a 7-day break.

Key Instructions:

  • Start on the First Day of Your Period: Provides immediate protection.
  • Daily Routine: Take one pill at the same time each day.
  • 7-Day Break: During this break, you may experience a withdrawal bleed similar to a period. You are still protected from pregnancy during this time.
  • Missed Pill: Follow the guidance provided in the leaflet or consult a healthcare professional.

If starting the pill on days 2–5 of your cycle, use additional contraception (e.g., condoms) for seven days.

What Should I Do If I Miss a Pill?

Missing a pill can affect the contraceptive efficacy of Microgynon. Follow these instructions:

Missing One Pill:

  • Take it as soon as you remember, even if it means taking two pills on the same day.
  • Continue the rest of the pack as normal.

Missing Two or More Pills:

  • Take the most recent missed pill immediately and skip the earlier missed ones.
  • Use additional contraception for the next 7 days.

If you miss pills during the first week and have had unprotected sex, emergency contraception may be required.

What Are the Dosage Options for Microgynon?

Microgynon 30 contains:

  • 150 mcg levonorgestrel (progestogen).
  • 30 mcg ethinylestradiol (oestrogen).

This dosage provides effective contraception while minimising the risk of side effects.

Side Effects of Microgynon

Like all medications, Microgynon may cause side effects, though these are typically mild and temporary.

  • Breast tenderness.
  • Changes in menstrual bleeding patterns.
