Cilest - An Effective Combined Contraceptive Pill

What is Cilest?

Cilest is a highly effective combined oral contraceptive pill, providing over 99% protection against pregnancy when taken correctly. Containing two active ingredients, ethinylestradiol and norgestimate, Cilest mimics natural hormones to prevent ovulation and is also known to regulate periods and reduce menstrual pain.

Though Cilest was discontinued in 2019, its generic alternative, Cilique, is available and works in the same way, offering a reliable and convenient contraceptive option.

Benefits of Cilest

Cilest offers more than just pregnancy prevention:

Key Advantages

  • Immediate protection when taken on the first day of your period.
  • Regulated menstrual cycles, reducing heavy or painful periods.
  • Added spontaneity in your intimate life without the need for additional contraceptive measures (does not protect against STIs).
  • Effective and convenient, with one pill taken daily for 21 days followed by a seven-day break.

How Does Cilest Work?

Cilest works by delivering synthetic hormones that mimic natural oestrogen and progesterone. These hormones provide contraception through three mechanisms:

Hormonal Actions

  1. Prevention of Ovulation: The pill convinces your body that ovulation has already occurred, so no egg is released for fertilisation.
  2. Thickening of Cervical Mucus: Makes it difficult for sperm to travel to the womb.
  3. Thinning of the Uterine Lining: Prevents a fertilised egg from attaching and developing.

How to Take Cilest

Dosage Instructions

  • Take one tablet daily for 21 consecutive days.
  • Follow with a seven-day break during which you may experience a withdrawal bleed (similar to a period).
  • Start a new pack immediately after the seven-day break, even if bleeding continues.

Additional Tips for Effectiveness

  • Take your pill at the same time every day.
  • If not started on the first day of your period, use additional contraception (e.g., condoms) for seven days.
  • Swallow the pill with water, with or without food.

What to Do if You Miss a Pill

Missing a dose may reduce the effectiveness of Cilest. Here’s what to do:

Missing One Pill (<12 Hours Late):

  • Take the missed pill immediately.
  • Continue with the rest of the pack as usual.

Missing Two or More Pills (>12 Hours Late):

  • Take the most recent missed pill as soon as possible.
  • Skip earlier missed pills and continue the pack.
  • Use additional contraception for the next seven days.

For more guidance on missed pills, consult your healthcare professional or pharmacist.
